When Data Disappears: Lessons from an N/A Analysis for Vietnamese Sports

There are analyses remembered not for their findings but for their emptiness. I recently received a nine-part esports report that seemed comprehensive, from patch notes to finances to governance. Every column said N/A. No game title, no version, no win rate, no roster, no transfer, no incident. The report simply repeated: not enough information to assess. An N/A report is not a blank page. It is a silent confession: we face nine questions but no one is responsible for collecting answers. That is more frightening than a wrong number. A wrong number can be checked; systemic absence is hard to expose. Vietnamese football often lives with N/A-like reports. Many V.League clubs do not publish expected goals or progressive passes. Lower divisions have almost no tracking data. In such an environment, an empty analysis is not an exception but a rule. The problem is not the lack of numbers. It is treating emptiness as a full stop instead of a signal. A team can lose repeatedly and claim they followed the plan because no pressing metrics exist. A player can decline and be defended by saying he was unlucky because no heat map exists. Missing data is not innocent; it protects subjectivity. But I also distrust the worship of numbers. Some things cannot be measured: a player's breath before a penalty, the way he stands up after a rough tackle. Good sports analysis knows when data is enough and when it is only a fragment. An N/A analysis is valuable as a warning. It reveals a system lacking cameras, lacking note-takers, lacking verification. Sports media must tell not only stories on the pitch but also stories about numbers never collected. An empty stadium still echoes. An empty page still asks why it is empty.
